Streamline Developers’ team won the coveted Carteret Literacy Council’s (CLC) annual spelling bee held recently at The History Museum of Morehead City. For the second year in a row, Streamline’s team took home the coveted traveling trophy and the “spirit stick.” CLC conducts the annual bee to raise money and awareness for its many programs. Adult students in Carteret County receive free, confidential tutoring wanting to develop reading, writing, math, and technology skills at all levels, as well as GED studies and citizenship preparedness. Master spellers Brynn Phillips, Nicole Barnes and Jeremy Brandt faced fierce competition from spellers representing Williams Hardware, Bethlehem Methodist Church, Shine Academy and Kimeplex Park. “This is our largest fund-raising event of the year, and without it, many of programs would not be possible,” said CLC Board President Frank Galizia. “We have mapped out a plan to expand our services and offerings, and having generous sponsors will allow us to do that. Title sponsors for the event were Frank Door Company, Noe Funeral Service, Waters Contracting, Carteret County News-Times, and Ralph’s Sign Shop. CLC receives $8,000 grant from Dollar General foundation The Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded the Carteret Literacy Council an $8,000 grant to support adult literacy. With a population of approximately 69,000 in Carteret County, 14 percent of adults lack basic literacy skills and 12.5 percent of residents live below poverty level. Since 1984, it has been the mission of the Carteret Literacy Council to reduce illiteracy by training volunteers to become tutors and work with students to improve life skills, improve reading, writing and math skills, along with GED preparedness, English as a Second Language studies and citizenship prep. We are introducing new modules to include digital and workplace literacy. With the support of corporate grants, foundations and individual donations, the council will continue to strive for victory over illiteracy. “Consistent with our mission of serving others, we are excited to provide these organizations with funding to further literacy and education across the communities we call home,” said Todd Vasos, Dollar General’s CEO. “It is always so exciting to see the true and meaningful impact the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has on both children and adults looking to improve their lives through literacy.” Accessibility Statement The Carteret Literacy Council is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for people with disabilities.     Help Promote Literacy The Carteret Literacy Council was established in 1984 as a 501(c)3 organization. We have one paid part-time staff member. All the rest are volunteers – tutors, board members, and others. To learn more about volunteer opportunities, click here . We do not receive any state or federal monies. Our funding comes from direct donations, council memberships, sponsorships and grants, and fundraising activities like the annual Literacy Bee. These provide the learning materials given to our adult students and cover our office overhead costs. You can help us raise awareness, just by booking us to speak to your civic organization or church group. We would love to share the powerful impact we have made in our communities and how you can become a part of that effort.
